Top 5 Best Sonic The Hedgehog Games

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of Sonic the Hedgehog, we’ve decided to make four “Top 5” lists about our favorite blue Hedgehog. The first being his best games. Check it out

5. Sonic Adventure 2

Not only is Sonic Adventure 2 one of the greatest – and my favorite – Sonic games, but it’s also one of the last Sonic games that DIDN’T suck. Releasing just 10 years ago, Sonic Adventure 2 had some of the best graphics of its time and the audio was sweet music to your ears. The game also introduced new characters that gained instant popularity over the years, Shadow the Hedgehog and Rogue the Bat. With a variety of gameplay elements, impressive level design and the addictive Chao Garden minigame, Sonic Adventure 2 is what many fans consider “the blueprint to a good 3D Sonic game”.

In Sonic Adventure 2, Dr. Eggman seeks to reactivate an old space colony named ARK and use its central cannon to take over the world. There are two storylines in SA2. You can choose the Hero story, playing as Sonic, Tails and Knuckles, or you can choose the Dark Side story, playing as Shadow, Eggman and Rogue. Beating each storyline, you can one final mission that will conclude the game and in my opinion, Sonic Adventure 2 has the best boss fight out of any Sonic game released yet.

4. Sonic the Hedgehog

This is a no-brainer. Sonic the Hedgehog belongs on this list for one reason and one reason only: it started it all. The first Sonic game – released 20 years – ago and it introduced chaos emeralds, Dr. Robotnik (now notoriously known as Eggman) and of course, the uber fast, Sonic the Hedgehog. There was no way we could have put together a list of the best Sonic games without including the very first.

Even the game’s first stage, Green Hill Zone, is legendary. Even newer Sonic games (Sonic 4, Generations) try and emulate the excitement that the player gets running through every zone, collecting chaos emeralds and imminently defeating Eggman. Needless to say, Sonic the Hedgehog is the “Super Mario Bros. ” of the Sonic franchise.

3. Sonic 2

Sonic 2 was the direct sequel to Sonic the Hedgehog and was spearheaded by Yuji Naka. Robotnik was back and he was going to try to take over the world twice as hard this time! SEGA capitalized on Sonic’s success with Sonic 2 and introduced longer, harder and more varied stages this time around. Sonic 2 is also famous for the debut of Miles “Tails” Prower. Tails’ inclusion made Sonic 2 the first multiplayer game in the series allowing two players to play as either Sonic or Tails. There was also the introduction of the seventh chaos emerald that allowed Sonic to turn into Super Sonic. This is back in the good old days when Sonic could turn into Super Sonic whenever he wanted instead of waiting until the last boss battle.

2. Sonic & Knuckles

Before Sonic Adventure 2, where players could play as six different characters, there was Sonic & Knuckles, a game which allowed players to play as the characters in the title. Strangely, Sonic & Knuckles feels a hell of a lot more varied than Sonic Adventure 2 and gives the game an overall satisfying feeling.

One of the biggest reasons Sonic & Knuckles is famous is the fact that players can lock onto Sonic 2 or Sonic 3 and allow Knuckles to play through the multiple levels in the latter games. With this feature, players can collect up to 14 chaos emeralds and in turn, that gives you one of the most diverse and most challenging Sonic games to date.

1. Sonic CD

If you walk up to a newb Sonic fan, who’s never owned a SEGA system, they probably have no idea what Sonic CD is because it’s never on any of these collections that are chucked out yearly. It’s definitely overlooked, but it’s a really good game. Sonic CD stands out from the crowd. It introduced fans to time travel mechanics via speed posts, allowing players to go back and play levels in multiple ways each time and with each action affecting the future. Time travel brought us 84 different stages and each stage would give us a new ending.

Sonic CD also introduced Amy Rose and Metal Sonic (Not to be confused with Silver Sonic from Sonic 2) and a radically different theme for Sonic.
