Review | Hitman Absolution : Agent 47’s Triumphant Return

Step aside Assassin’s Creed because the true assassin has finally appeared on the PS3. Now let me start by saying this, as a child I was a huge Hitman fan and I was so sad when the seres vanished only to return as a subpar Hollywood film. In May 2011, Square Enix announced that Agent 47 would make his debut on PlayStation 3. Words cannot describe how excited I was and after playing the entire game, Square Enix did not disappoint.

Hitman: Absolution runs on the all new Glacier 2 engine and is visually stunning. From the iris in Agent 47’s eye to the pores in his skin, some of Hitman: Absolution’s scenes can fool one into believing the game is a next-gen launch title. There are some areas in the game in which 47 must travel through large crowds of people, meaning that hundreds of characters will have to be on the screen at once. During these levels, there are no traces of frame rate dips which is quite impressive.

Now if any Hitman fanboys are out there, you guys know Hitman was never too story heavy. Sure it had a story, but the problem with Absolution is it seems like they could have taken the story and just made a movie out of it. Now don’t get me wrong, the story is incredible but if you are one of those fanboys that can’t get over the small things then you may get upset with the story. But if you are a true Hitman fan, you can appreciate the small changes they made because all in all Hitman: Absolution is amazing. The level mapping is a whole lot smaller than the classic Hitman games, but they are built so well that they have a fantastic replay value to them!

Controls in this game are very tight and responsive, plus they are quite simple to learn! But there is one thing I cannot stress enough: Hitman should not have Quick Time Events. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t hate the QTEs in games, but please don’t continue to put QTEs in Hitman games! Thank you!

There are so many different ways to play this game that you probably won’t kill someone the same way twice or you may even find a way to let them live. I personally have challenged myself to kill all my targets in various ways with each playthrough. Without giving too much away, I have killed one target three different ways: sniping him, poisoning his drugs, and luring him to a secluded place and stabbing him! Without a doubt, Hitman: Absolution‘s non-linearity will keep you busy.

Hitman: Absolution is no perfect game. The targets in this game aren’t as important as targets in previous Hitman games. The targets in Absolution feel more like fillers as you make your way to more important contracts.

Hitman: Absolution introduces “Contracts Mode” which is a multiplayer feature that allows players to create your levels using the specific levels they’ve played through in the single-player campaign and then you “play to create” which is the most amazing idea I’ve ever heard of! Have you ever seen those levels of games that people create and you just know that even they couldn’t play it? Well in “play to create” they drop you into the beginning of a level, choose up to three targets and then you have to kill them. It then saves what you do. If you kill a man with fiber wire, when players start your level it will make fiber wire the weapon to earn extra money. Kill everyone in a suit without changing your attire? That will save on there. Never getting spotted, and so on and so forth. I have never seen an online create mode like this, but it is ingenious!

Hitman: Absolution ends on a satisfying note and is a must-own for any previous Hitman fans.
