What I Want To See In WWE ’14

wwe '13If you’re a fan of WWE programming, you’ve probably enjoyed THQ’s recent entries to video game franchise. Some feel that WWE ’13 is so awesome that there’s no way THQ can top themselves next year. I say they’re wrong.

WWE ’13 did a lot of things right: Revisiting the Attitude Era, the second golden age in professional wrestling (after the Hulkamania Era in the 80’s), enhancing the Create-A-Arena feature, having the largest roster out of all WWE games and providing better servers for the game! Here’s what I think should be featured in the next WWE game.

Multi-Team Tag Matches

Since WWE recently revamped their tag team division, we’ve been getting a number of triple-threat and fatal four-way tag team matches over the last couple of months. How these matches work is one member from two different teams start the match in the ring. They can tag in any other member from a different team to take their spot, as they would tag their normal tag partner in a normal tag team match. The matches can end in a one-fall or be an elimination match to determine which tag team is good enough to conquer all.

Multi-team tag matches aren’t new in WWE. One of the most reputable tag team matches would be Edge & Christian vs The Dudley Boys vs The Hardy Boys at Wrestlemania X-Seven for the WWE Tag Team Championships. Could you imagine how awesome it would be to have a triple-threat tag team TLC match? I can. And let me tell you, it sounds fun.

Traditional Survivor Series Matches

Although the Traditional Survivor Series match has taken a back seat in the WWE’s interests lately, the match is still a big part of history. A Traditional Survivor Series match features two teams, each comprised of five wrestlers, going against one another in an elimination match. The last team standing picks up the win. Sure, you can just go to Exhibition Mode in WWE ’13 and make a six-man elimination tag match, but I’d really love to see a ten-man elimination tag match. It’d open a sense of realism to the career mode (remember that horrible Bragging Rights match from WWE ’12?) and would be fun online. The most famous Traditional Survivor Series match was in 2001, when Team WWF defeated The Alliance (WCW and ECW) in order for Vince McMahon to maintain control the World Wrestling Federation.

A Better Career Mode

Don’t get me wrong, I loved Attitude Mode in WWE ’13. Seeing some of the best matches in the Attitude Era remade in this video game was great. But it’s not the best career mode out of all WWE games in my opinion. My personal favorite would be Shut Your Mouth! in 2002. With your created wrestler, you’re just an average joe wrestling on Sunday Night Heat. Eventually, you’ll be drafted to either RAW or Smackdown. You’ll engage in feuds, and eventually win the Intercontinental Championship. From there, you’ll make your way to the mountain top. You’ll become the WWE Champion. And the game doesn’t stop there, and it certainly doesn’t stop at Wrestlemania. It keeps going. Like The Rock did in real life, you’ll be able to take time off from your wrestling career and feature in movies, if you want to. You were given career choices in Shut Your Mouth! My goodness, it was great. Please, Shut Your Mouth!-esque career mode back in WWE ’14.

General Manager Mode

General Manager Mode was one of the most popular modes in the history of the WWE series. It first appeared in WWE Smackdown vs Raw 2006 (which also features the best soundtrack of any WWE game) and put you in control of either RAW or Smackdown. You were in control of booking matches, setting up feuds and making sure your wrestlers were happy with their job. If a wrestler is upset that he isn’t being paid enough or isn’t getting as many title shots as he thinks he deserves, he’ll eventually quit and jump ship to the other brand. Your main priority was making money. From the start, you had a fixed budget and had to hire the wrestlers you could afford. With them, you’ll need to build your show into a money-making, ratings-rising machine but you would also need to make sure your top wrestlers don’t get injured.

WWE Universe is viewed as the replacement for GM Mode, which hasn’t appeared since WWE Smackdown vs RAW 2008, but it doesn’t give you that sense of danger. I can simulate every match in Universe mode and won’t care but in GM Mode, who came out on top in a feud mattered when it came to ratings and money. I would play those matches. GM Mode was something I could revisit after the career mode and play until the next WWE game came out. Now can you imagine playing GM Mode against someone else online? I’d love to see this make a return in WWE ’14.

Did I leave something off? What would you like to see in the next WWE game? Leave your thoughts in the comments section below!

I hope they go deeper with an rpg kind of style like they did with nba 2k13, and loved that they went with the attitude era. Maybe next game they will focuse on the Monday night buyout more and show the war between wwe and wcw. I know alot of wcw are with TNA now but may still have legends contracts. Also conjuction a story mode to use with a created player as well aside from the other story one.

Tottaly agree a carrer mode where you can raise your own created wrestler grow in the company. But what would be really cool was if they made a mode just like nxt where you create a wrestler and he get a pro for train him.

I agree with bringing the GM mode back. Although you can change matches in the WWE Universe mode of WWE13 – it isn’t the same. I also think they should allow you to freely change each wrestler’s appearance, not just threads. Put ’em in a suit, shave their heads, or give them brand new outfits altogether.

ALSO – I am not sure which Smackdown title it was, but there was one where you can choose different options for after the match – beating your beaten opponents with chairs, celebrating, etc. Some really cool elements could be added to that effect.

And the DLC I think needs to go – should only be used to add roster changes like new music / attires. Either that OR allow DLC characters to be used in Story mode (being able to upload / download those stories)

They should put in dynasty/franchise mode like in Madden where you can be any show or create your own, then you sign talent from real guys and randomly generated wrestlers. On legend difficulty, they would have life spans and could die. Say you get this e-mail that says ‘The Miz has been found dead outside of his home. Authorities suspect hiss real-life rival (random guy) Kevin Star” I know this is long but it would be awesome

  1. I like the GM mode idea, but I think for career it should be the 2001-2005 era

They should bring back the scrolling back stage matches where 4-6 of you could have an ecw style brawl back stage with pinfalls you could even go outside in to train station it was awesome and so much fun. It was great going from backstage area to backstage area not having to pick one at the start. They need to realize people want more extreme matches stacked tables, jumping off the stage, moves off the stage (like jumping off the smackdown fist remember that), loads of ladder moves, loads of table finishers, fighting in the cheap seats. I also agreed GM mode should be back they was great to

It’s a long shot but here’s a few things I’d like to see in the next iteration of WWE- especially on the next gen consoles. I’d love to see a fully realized, fully destructible/ destructive (interactive) arena, with no load times between areas. Assign damage values to MATERIALS, not just areas. For instance, a DDT on the steel entrance ramp would do considerably more damage than an in-ring one. Glass shatters be it a window or Titantron. Allow wrestlers to actually stand on and vault off the crowd barricade. Give us the option to assign moves to barricade and table grapples. Set up chairs for vaulting (like Sabu’s Triple Jump Moonsault). Get rid of the in-ring invisible wall so that normal moves can be done through/ over the ropes, to the outside. Implement the Euphoria engine so that every sell is unique. Incorporate Kinect/ Move cameras for easier CAW/ logo creation.Bring back micromanaged intro creation so we can time pyro and lighting down to the second (ala WWE Raw for Xbox). Phonetic pronunciation, with speed and accent control so ring announcers can (in theory) say any name. Choice of match calling (JBL, Booker T, King, Cole, or JR). Actual wrestler voices for I Quit matches.Different lengths for ladders. More organic crowd reaction. Downloadable/ updatable match calling. Bring back the Holy Sh*t chant. Make all moves, at all points, interruptible. Allow wrestlers to register damage from more than one wrestler at a time (i.e. ankle lock and crossface at the same time). Use other wrestlers as a weapon (i.e. suplex Mysterio onto downed wrestler, causing damage to both). Play through the ECW/ WCW eras. A community creations website that allows you to bookmark wrestlers and schedule downloads directly from the site to your console (ala bungie.net) rather than having to rely on the current fundamentally broken system. Actual varied injuries dependent on specific damage taken in a match. Actual FAT wrestlers. The option to assign weapons to wrestler intros (walking out with bat or barbed wire 2×4). Spanish announcers table (to break :]) ….. I think I’m done. Even half of this stuff and I’d be a very, very happy man.

I agree but, I think the whole entire game should be remade or give the rights to another company who can pull it off. And another thing is there ability to take old things that made the game good and don’t improve on it. They rather take the things off and leave it behind.

What I’d love to see as a career mode is re-writing history. You start from the beginning, working matches with the likes of Hulk and Jake the Snake. Then you move on to the attitude era playing matches through there with Bret Hart and D-X then you move on to the Monday Night Wars and then on to the Invasion. Eventually coming up to the present day. In the end you challenge the Undertaker at Wrestlemania and then you go on to the Hall of Fame.

Just imagine how many superstars, past and present, could be involved in this roster. If you start from the very beginning of WWE the roster would be huge, plus you’d be able to cover all the major events in the company. It would be great.
